THOMAS HART BENTON (1889-1975) Thomas Hart Benton's enthusiasm for Martha's Vineyard, where he summered between 1918 and 1974, resulted in compositions, drawn from life, celebrating numerous aspects of Island life. In fact, it was there during the 1920's that Benton first depicted the American scene. In works as The Lord Is My Shepherd (1923, The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York), Benton immortalized Vineyard residents, and in July Hay (1942, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), he paid homage to the Island's farmers. Activities such as those depicted in Picnic (1943, private collection), and View of Menemsha with Sailboat (1954, private collection), also inspired drawings, clay maquettes, watercolors, gouaches, oil paintings and lithographs.
